Coyote and Selected Poems by

Exiles Never Touch

 Together through the night
 a quiet holds them close,
 they feel the remorse
 of quarrel and separation,
every moment is a plea for strength,
every thought is a phrase of love,
and he trembles to hold his arm
 back from her waist,
                                           she’ll just move away,
 and she stammers through whispers
 the fear of making mistakes,
                                           I know I’m being a stupid girl,
and so they pass the night
 without stopping and realizing
that this is the one time in life
 that Chance may rest
 while indecision takes control.
