Coyote and Selected Poems by
 Lamar Thomas

Eyes Open in December

She was there alone by the counter
 watching the herbs and fruits
like a perfect still life with wonder.
And it was here in our kitchen,
Rosemary fresh, crisp scent of coriander,
The feelings of being so very alive
In this neighborhood of open fires,
It was here that I saw her
 So beautiful and new,
 And I saw my reflection,
So I rose and stood beside her
 And together we began,
With the ginger and the lily,
 We began our lives together.
We began again in this season
 Of celebrations, of family,
 And best of all,
this blessed thing that we call 'us'.
